The Need

International Justice Mission (IJM) is a global non-governmental human rights organization which protects the poor from violence by rescuing victims, bringing the criminals to justice, restoring survivors to safety and strength and helping local law enforcement build a safe future that lasts. 
International Justice Mission (IJM) Uganda is working through partnership with the government and other agencies to build capacity for the public justice system to provide justice for survivors of Gender Based Violence (GBV). As an Investigations Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to bring substantive relief to victims of GBV by Supporting the Investigations Coordinator and the SCOPE team in Kabarole and Kamwenge Districts in implementing the casework element of the project. 
This position is based in Fort Portal, Uganda and reports to the Investigations Coordinator

Responsibilities

Some specific responsibilities are as follows:

  • Conduct surveillance and undercover operations in support of investigations.
  • Track and document case related data in paper and electronic case tracking management systems.
  • Mobilize and coordinate training/mentoring workshops for police in Kamwenge and Kabarole Districts. 
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Development

  • Participate in IJM programs in professionalism and Christian spiritual formation.

Key Working Relationships

Internal
This position is responsible for cultivating and maintaining good working relationships with all IJM staff.
External

  • Capable of establishing and maintaining healthy working relationship with key government stake holders in the PJS.

Travel Requirements

  • This position requires frequent travel to the project area during work hours.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Diploma in law (law enforcement, criminal justice, etc. preferred). A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is added advantage. 
  • At least one year of experience in criminal investigation (Police CID)
  • Knowledge and experience in undercover surveillance and evidence collection.
  • At least one year of experience working with survivors of GBV (women and children), preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and experience driving manual vehicles on rough terrain.
  • Process server certification and self-defense/combat training preferred.
  • Fluency in English and Luganda, with excellent writing and oration in both.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Have a high level of physical fitness 
  • Critical thinker and comes up with working solutions to problems.
